Knowing What You Don’t Know
Listen to this excerpt where Balthasar is talking about knowing what you don’t know.
You know many things but do you know what you don’t know?
I remember a little model I saw. First you draw a circle and you make a little piece of pie called “K”. And then you make a bigger little piece of pie called “KD”. So rest of the circle is DDK.
Now the little piece colored in the “K” is what you know about something. And then guess what “KD” is. It’s what you know you don’t know about something.
So we can take something simple like music. I’m sure most of you know a lot about music. But let’s say you’ve never learnt to write music. And then you kind of know that you don’t know that. Perhaps you’ve never made music and you know that you don’t know that. And usually what we know that we don’t know about is something is much bigger than what we know about something.
Would you all say that you know quiet a bit? About relationships – what works, what doesn’t work? But could you say a lot of relationships you know you don’t know? And just on that I can run a whole course, a whole 5 day course. But I’ve decided to run a shorter 2 day course called “Only Love”. It won’t just be about relationships but you know that’s our temples, our temples for growing and learning.
And then the next bit is the rest of the circle “DDK”. Now what do you think what stands for? If the first bit is what you know that you know, the second bit is what you know you don’t know. What’s the rest? What you don’t know you don’t know. If you look at any aspect of life whether it’s music, mathematics, science – most is actually what we don’t know we don’t know.
Because there is so much to discover in any aspect of life – to discover and learn.
And then we have another little model you can say in metaphysics. This model relates to what you are. So there is quiet a bit that you think you know you are but then you start doing a bit of spiritual work, a bit of metaphysical work and then you start going “I don’t know that about myself.”, “I know I don’t know that.”.
But then after a few years “Oh there is so much more to what I am!”, “So much more than I can begin to imagine.”.
And I can guarantee you one thing when you start doing some work for a few years: There is always more. It’s a beautiful endless journey of discovery.
Eventually you find out you are the most interesting being to yourself as you start discovering more and more about yourself, as you start seeing you have amazing untapped possibilities that you start bringing through your inspiration, your aspirations.
